Going by the
dictionary definition of ‘agile’, it is simply defined as the ability to move
swiftly. The same term, when used in a business environment or an organization,
becomes a robust set of principles & frameworks which empowers the self-organizing
cross-functional teams to collaborate and respond to changes and deal with
uncertainties.
Simply put,
Agile Development refers to a collection of methodologies and practices which
are based on the Agile Manifesto and the 12 Principles. These practices are
driven by value-based prioritization of work, and focus on collaboration and
feedback loop.
In practice, the
whole project is divided into small sprints of specific timeframes, ranging
from one week to four weeks, wherein each sprint begins with brainstorming,
collaboration between cross-functional teams to discuss & prioritize task,
and enables continuous feedback with rapid improvement.
A brief
history of Agile
As early as
2001, a group of software developers started combining old and new ideas to
create a methodology that worked best for them. It emphasized on close
collaboration between business stakeholders and development team, business
value delivery with efficient self-organizing teams, and ways to craft,
confirm, and deliver code.
In 2021, this
group of 17 people recognized the potential of their methodologies and decided
to organize them in the form of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development so
as to benefit organizations of different sizes in various domains.
Hence, the Agile
Manifesto and 12 Principles were published online, gaining popularity and
assisting numerous enterprises in agile response to changes and product deliveries.
Agile
Manifesto
The Manifesto
for Agile Development states that though processes & tools, comprehensive
documentation, contract negotiation, and following a plan are important, what
is extremely vital is focussing on individuals & interactions, working
software, customer collaboration, and responding to change.
12 Principles
of Agile
Then there are
12 Principles based on Agile Manifesto, which are:
1. The utmost priority is to
satisfy customer by the means of early and constant valuable product
changes/updates.
2.
Embrace change requirements
even at later stages of development, as it gives a competitive advantage.
3.
Delivery of working software
frequenting a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference for
shorter timeframes.
4.
Daily communication and
collaboration between business people and developers throughout the project.
5.
Involve motivated individuals.
Allow the environment and support to work, and trust them as they make the
delivery.
6.
Encourage face-to-face
conversations for effective and efficient communication to & within the
development team.
7.
To have a working software is the
most important parameter of progress.
8.
With sustainable development
promoted by Agile
processes, the sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a
continuous pace indefinitely.
9.
Improved agility can be
achieved by focused attention to technical superiority and great design.
10.
Simplicity is the art of maximizing
the amount of work not done, and is essential for making the process agile.
11.
The self-organizing team has
the capability to develop the best architectures, designs, and requirements.
12.
Regular reflection on the ways
to become more effective, and readjust the efforts & behaviour accordingly.
While all these
principles, methodologies, and manifesto are there to identify the true
potential and bring out the best in the team so as to effectively get the tasks
done, it is cited that Agile
product development can sometimes become too complicated as it involves
cross-functional groups with different priorities. In order to guarantee the
successful delivery & release of product, it is important to adopt Agile
Prioritization Models for prioritizing tasks and deliverables.
Mr. Patrick von
Schlag, an Agile pro, will be providing deep-dive and practical insights about
Agile adaptation and Agile Prioritization Techniques from his experience of
over 30 years in Agile/Scrum practices. Here are some acclaimed Agile Prioritization Techniques he
will be discussing in the webinar:
·
Kano Model
It involves
taking into consideration three levels of user feedback, i.e., must-have/basic
features, exciters, and delighters. These features are assessed to gain the
highest customer satisfaction, and hence the priority is decided accordingly.
·
Opportunity Scoring
This model
focuses on data from user research to ascertain the user expectation of the
product. Prioritize the problems that customer expects to be resolved quickly,
and ignore the changes that you plan to invest in but users don’t care.
·
Priority Poker
Very similar to
playing poker, in this model, all the stakeholders involved in the project are
gathered and are asked to vote for impact or significance of each task/change
that is scheduled. Based on this voting, the big-ticket items are prioritized
to yield desirable results.
Other Agile
Prioritization Models to be explored in the webinar include MoSCoW Model, and Cost
of Delay. Mr. Schlag will further
lay emphasis on the most widely used models, while throwing light on topics
like how to use these prioritization models, and proven techniques for making
prioritization activities fun & effective.
